Montauk

Ditch Plains

Ditch Plains is the most famous surfing spot on Long Island.  This beach is inhabited by surfers from all over the east coast.  Even on a not so nice day the surfers are out there.  The way the waves roll onto the shore here is what is most appealing to surfers.  If you are not a surfer you can get lessons for the afternoon and give it a shot just for fun.  There are also many places to rent boards and wetsuits around so you will not have a hard time trying to find a place to supply these things for you.  Or if you are not willing to give it a try it is also just very interesting and exciting to watch the surfers all around.  They are out there all day waiting for the perfect wave and perfect ride.  It is a must see.

Montauk Point Lighthouse. It is really THE END

The Montauk Point Lighthouse is really the end of Long Island.  The visitor station there is very helpful, interesting and interactive.  It is located in a pretty park with some hiking trails and also right by the water of course so there is plenty to do.  This is the first and oldest lighthouse in New York state.  This lighthouse was authorized by our first president George Washington in 1792.  It took about 5 months to construct.  This still serves as an aid for navigation to many.  There are 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse.  The light flashes every 5 seconds.  It is a beautiful and very interesting site to see so it is definitely worth the trip.  It is also very nice from the top. Although you can't walk around the deck like you can in the Fire Island lighthouse it is still a pretty site.  It really is the very end of Long Island.

The Big Duck

The Big Duck is located in Flanders.  It is out east near Riverhead.  In 1931 a local duck farmer named Martin Maurer built this large duck.  Since it is hollow inside you can go in.  Back then Maurer sold eggs and ducks here.  The ducks location has changed a few times.  But it has always been in the same general area.  The shop is open but instead of selling ducks and eggs it sells duck and long island souvenirs to many.  In the wintertime for Christmas they hold a duck lighting where the elementary schools come and sing a few carols as they light the duck.

Davis Park Fire Island

The past weekend i stayed a few nights with my friends at a beach house they rented for the week on Davis Park Fire Island. Unfortunately i forgot my camera over the weekend so these pictures are not mine but i wanted to write about it because it was a nice place to visit. To get here you take the Patchogue ferry over to Davis Park which is about thirty minutes long. There isn't much here besides the beach but on hot summer days that is all you really need. You can go down to the bay to clam or swim or you can go in the ocean or walk the ocean to find beautiful shells and see what the ocean has brought up to the sand that day. You can really find some cool stuff. This is also a nice place to spend a vacation. You can rent a house with friends or family and have some fun. Everyone is very friendly here so you can also meet new people. There is also a marina here so you can also dock your boat. There is a little store, a concession stand, and the Casino Cafe. Davis Park became official with the town establishing the marina and a public park in 1945. It is a very laid back and relaxed atmosphere which is very enjoyable.
