Ditch Plains is the most famous surfing spot on Long Island. This beach is inhabited by surfers from all over the east coast. Even on a not so nice day the surfers are out there. The way the waves roll onto the shore here is what is most appealing to surfers. If you are not a surfer you can get lessons for the afternoon and give it a shot just for fun. There are also many places to rent boards and wetsuits around so you will not have a hard time trying to find a place to supply these things for you. Or if you are not willing to give it a try it is also just very interesting and exciting to watch the surfers all around. They are out there all day waiting for the perfect wave and perfect ride. It is a must see.
